Welcome!

My name is Marcia Trahan, and I’m a writer, editor, and teacher based in South Burlington, Vermont. I’ve helped writers of all ages, levels, and interests to view their work and their abilities in a new light. I offer manuscript editing and critique services and ongoing mentorships. I provide these services through email and regular mail, so I can work with you no matter where you live.

My primary area of specialty is personal narrative: memoir and the personal essay. I also love working with novelists and short-story writers, and have a particular interest in fiction with autobiographical origins.

My philosophy is simple: I believe that anyone can improve his or her writing skills with the right kind of guidance. Many argue that creative writing “cannot be taught.” As a graduate of the Bennington Writing Seminars’ Master of Fine Arts program, and as someone who has had the great privilege of seeing my own students’ and clients' work grow and deepen, I contend that the craft of writing can be taught when both teacher and student are willing to put in the necessary effort, when both come to the table with good will.

My approach is also simple: I listen, I encourage, I challenge; I meet you where you are and show you where you can go from there. While keeping your personal goals foremost in my mind, I suggest ways for you to streamline and clarify your writing, to make it as engaging and powerful as it can be. Most people find that it’s equally helpful when I point out their strengths—the things they’re already doing successfully—as well as the areas in which they can improve.
